DESIGNING WITH IMPACT
OVERVIEW
The problems of human trafficking, forced labor, and violence against women and children are, sadly, global and persistent. Organizations like International Justice Mission (IJM) and its partners are working with local governments to enact policies that end these injustices and protect vulnerable populations. The challenge? Those same governments don’t often employ good processes for creating such policies—and even do so without the input of those most affected. This top-down approach frequently results in well-meaning but poorly-performing regulations that don’t have their intended effects.

Strategy
IJM’s solution? Encourage governments and allies to embrace Human-Centered Design in their policymaking, including and empowering survivors‘ voices in the very development of new protective laws.
Polymath worked with IJM to document and distill this lengthy, complex approach into a set of teachable “field guides” for implementation across its global network. Containing more than 250 pages of workshop material, facilitator instruction, and printable exercises that we designed, the field guides are now being used in South Asia and beyond to advance IJM’s ambitious goal to protect 500 million people from violence.

OUR FAVORITE PART
The guide design makes extensive use of color-coding for information relay and navigation. Color themes carry forward from the table of contents to each section throughout. Interior pages use “IJM Blue” backgrounds to distinguish between core content and activities. And facilitators even get their own color with callout boxes and notes for leaders distinguished in a contrasting yellow.

RESULTS
"Thank you for supporting this…meaningful effort. I cannot imagine any other partner to do this with to such excellence."
